SPLIT – situated on the Adriatic coast in the Central Dalmatia, on the peninsula of Split (of Marjan). The oldest city nucleus is located beneath the Marjan park-forest, situated west from the old city nucleus. The peninsula of Split is surrounded by the islands of Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Čiovo. According to the 2001 Census of Population, the city of Split has 188.694 inhabitants. The city`s origin is associated with the construction of the Diocletian`s Palace, between the year 295 and 305, due to the favourable geographic position and the pleasant Mediterranean climate. Diocletian, the Roman emperor from 284 to 305 , originated from a modest family and his original name was Diokles. He was known as a great reformer of the Roman Empire because he introduced the simultaneous government of four rulers. He prosecuted the Christians and considered himself to be a God. He built the grand Palace on the territory of today`s city of Split so as to spend his retirement days there (Diocletian was the only Roman emperor who willfully abdicated). The Diocletian`s Palace is the largest and the best preserved palace of the Late Antiquity in the world, and the aqueduct from the Jadro River spring dating from that period is still in use. The citizens of Split tend to say that their city is “the sportiest city in the world”, because Split is a city with the highest number of medals in respect to the number of its citizens. In the very center of the city, there are the thermal baths with their own spring of sulphurous medicinal water.
